Thursday Philosophical Musings: Being excited and bullish on AI can also mean being uncertain about the future

I’m both, if I’m being completely honest.

It can of course be both. New things are exciting, but also a little scary. When I read countless articles about AI coming for the middle of the career path, especially in white collar fields, I get pretty nervous - that’s literally me.

Should I consider being a firefighter like I always talked about? What about an electrician? Both are noble pursuits, and less likely to be replaced by AI… or are they? I saw a Boston Dynamics robot turn a valve off at the Tableau conference, does it only take a few more steps before it’s repairing broken pipes and plumbing an entire skyscraper? At the end of the day, as I remind myself of the article that I wrote recently… everything worthwhile is a little scary. The scariest part about the AI revolution is not knowing exactly what to prepare for. What skills do we build? Is it enough to just be really good at working with AI tools, designing custom GPTs, etc.?

Will it create a world where so few people hold the keys to wealth and abundance, or create abundance for most? Is it only the organizations that are pushing these innovations that will be deciding this?

One thing is for certain - nothing is for certain.

I don’t know.. am I going a little crazy? What do y’all think?

To be clear, the best indications I see say… if you do your best to learn AI skills now, you’ll probably be mostly fine, but your job will still change drastically most likely.

I think that’s a relatively realistic view, but it’s all still very uncertain as we navigate unknown waters. I try to stay positive with anything unknown - especially things that are mostly out of my control. But, it’s okay to be a little frazzled too. I think this is a good place to talk about it.
