Major Crowdsourced Data Project

I have been thinking of a fun way to get this Category kicked off with something that is useful for members & a good learning for all. I’m open to topics, but I had thought perhaps a current, relevant societal issue like “consumer cost increases as result of economic policy” or perhaps something public health related?

Obviously, we need to keep things purely apolitical and objective here. Politics are devisive by nature and we avoid that here. But, a project in which we can…

  1. Extract or Collect Data from Public Sources
  2. Organize, Clean Data
  3. Analyze and Present Data via Tableau Public, etc.

Would be a really cool thing to do. Since this would be a true community effort, I think we should all have an input in this. What would you like to see?

Watch this topic if you’re interested and make sure you leave a reply if you want to participate.

The cool thing is this can all be something we publish on the blog, then add to portfolios/resume at the end!

Hi @zack! It seems really interesting approach.
I myself have been thinking about creating a “Technology Adoption” project, which would map out historical trends on the technologies adopted over the years - finding out early movers and laggards, technologies that faded out etc - to help business narrow down on their next game-changing tech investment.

It is still a very raw idea of mine. Would love to hear your thoughts on it, and if we can use this idea for what you’re proposing.

This is a good idea. I’m curious how we would go about data collection. I think this is very relevant considering how AI is reshaping technology adoption at a much faster speed, and causing its own concerns around adoption of itself. Have you found any data sources for this yet by any chance?

I also received the suggestion of doing a crowdsourced “survey” of salaries in various analytics roles. Basically, we would anonymously collect submissions from members on salaries, what role, location, is it hybrid/remote, years of experience, etc.

It could be really interesting to see this.

@zack I haven’t figured out the data collection part, yet.
Like I said, it is a very raw idea at the moment. I just thought it seemed relevant based on your post, so I shared it.

Another idea, and this is a very relevant one I feel - is to build a scraper that detects entry level (0-2 yrs exp) job openings and sends alerts to your email. Considering the volume of applications received per posting, this could prove to be very beneficial.

I think that could be useful, yes.

I appreciate you sharing the ideas, I think they’re good ones and open to collaboration on some of these, maybe you can start a new thread if you want to spin one of these ideas up.

For the data project here, it would need to be something we could gather consistent data on. Maybe the Technology Adoption we could do that but would need to develop a bit further. Open to discussing that.

Or maybe it’s the salary survey one. That would be a bit easier to gather data, for sure. We’ll leave this open for others to weigh in here too.
