70% of Failures = Hall of Fame Worthy

7/10 Failure Rate is still good enough for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The average hall of famer bats at a .303. Yet we beat ourselves up if we fail.

Hall of famers keep showing up. They are consistent. They are more than their batting average.

I get it, maybe you can’t fail 70% of the time at your job. But, if you are striking out on job interviews or not landing interviews… remember, it just takes one.

I’m not a huge baseball fan, but I recently heard Ken Burns, the famous documentarian and huge baseball fanatic, talk about this and it got me thinking…

Why on earth are we so hard on ourselves if 70% failure is a good predictor of HOF induction? When the world’s best entrepreneurs tell us they failed over and over again before they found the right success formula?

Be kind to yourself.

It is so true. I played video games when I was younger, and some levels were hard to beat, but I still kept going because, in the end, I knew I would win the game. This requires failure and an understanding of what works and what does not work. It was the same before I got my data role, and sometimes rejections suck, but it takes one yes to land your opportunity.

Well said… keep going, applying lessons, and you’ll win the game. Gaming can really build up a lot of grit and persistence in people. Just like sports - a lot of those lessons can also be learned through video games. The challenge is just how to apply those lessons to all other things in life.
