With the challenges of the job market, especially with data related roles, my back up plan is to pursue an entry-level accounting role. However, I’m also running into another road block. It seems for many entry-level accounting roles, one either needs experience or an accounting degree. Another road block, student loans are not an option as I’ve exceeded the aggregate amounts, private loans are definitely not an option, and GI bill benefits are used up. Let’s throw in my age of 50 years into the mix, and it looks pretty dismal. Most jobs that I probably could get with relative ease would not even pay enough for me to pursue an accounting degree. This is where learning analytical tools like Python and SQL may come to the rescue.
Why learn SQL for accounting related roles?
- The accounting/financial fields are merging with data analytics.
- Having the ability to use SQL to extract and analyze enormous datasets may be more efficient than trying to use Excel spreadsheets.
- Having an understanding of database design can be useful if trying to find ways to store large datasets for easier retrieval and analysis.
- Having SQL technical skill sets could potentially give candidates a much needed competitive edge in lieu of a degree but with intentions on pursuing further education in accounting.
- This may be the most important one for someone my age. Being able to adapt to changing and evolving technologies and learning technical skills can demonstrate that us old timers are not stuck in our outdated ways and can learn the tools of the trade regardless of age.
Here’s to hoping SQL will come to the rescue!![]()
